A Chapter from The Whiskey Tango Sessions
The Hideaways began recording this record "The Whiskey Tango Sessions" in our home town of La Mesa, a real American small town in April of 2005 at “The Village” and “ The Ranch”, exactly one year ago to the day. None of us had any real experience working with this new technology, however, Blue was smart enough and the rest of us were drunk enough throughout the process that a year had passed, before we realized that Blue had actually figured out what he was doing. All of these sessions became a lesson on endurance drunkenness, it’s a wonder we got anything done at all. Thank God Blue remained focused, patient and sober while tolerating our sloshing about. One particular session of note was in the middle of a hot steamy, moonless August night when we were informed by a friend of Wolfgang’s that he would never get the little melody line straight after the fifteen millionth take, because he was way too hammered. Wolfgang’s friend said he would take him home and led him away like an infirmed patient and returned minutes latter alone, asking if we had a flash-light. All of us half crocked and puzzled asked “why?”  The friend said that on way out to the car Wolfgang suddenly puked and when he did, he projectile his dentures into some bush in the drive way, and they were unable to find them in the dark.  Wolfgang didn’t call us for days because he was embarrassed, we had to call him and when we did we told him we thought that was the coolest ever. Lo and behold, Wolfey did get the part right that night and when you listen to the organ melody on “Society Of Fear”, you will be able to picture the events that followed moments latter. Most sessions ended when we were no longer able to see straight, which didn’t take long, that’s why it took so long to get this far, yet Blue persevered. There are 12 songs on this disk and another dozen more finished and in the can for a follwup, and a dozen more that we have yet to begin tracking. And who knows, maybe the rest will be done this time next year. We figured that after a year of dinking around we ought a put something out. Well we did our best under the numbing circumstances serving up a little slice of Americana. So get a fresh cocktail, take a swig and pop on the disk.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we did getting polluted recording it, and if you find it torturous to listen to just think how we felt the day after each session and multiply that by the power of ten. We want to thank Napoleon Dynamite for his infinite wisdom and inspiration and our families, not only because they are our families, but because they tolerated the complete take over of their domiciles for months on end with only one near divorce to account for. And most of all we want to express our gratitude to you, the reader, our fans who make it all worth while, ‘cause if it weren’t for you, Id probably playing with myself rather than in The Hideaways. See ya in the trenches at a show!!
